With climate change and population surges squeezing water supplies, experts say that consuming recycled wastewater that has been treated could be the solution of the future.
Sydney relies on rainfall for about 85 per cent of its supply, and another 15 per cent comes from desalination.
Efforts are under way in Sydney to educate the public about the prospects of using recycled wastewater.
The process is being trialled at the Quakers Hill sewage disposal plant in north-western Sydney and the public are invited to take part in this journey.
