Sydney based nuclear medicine specialist and researcher, Professor Vijay Kumar has been awarded the Order of Australia 2017.
Professor Vijay Kumar, born in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, moved to Australia in 1974.
Prof. Kumar started his career at St Vincents Hospital that was followed by a stint at Liverpool Hosptial.
He the joined Westmead, where he's worked for over 20 years now.
Till 2016, Prof. Kumar was alos the President of Australian and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine.
He is currently the Treasurer and Governing Council Member of World Federation of Nuclear Medicine & Biology.
Talking to SBS, Prof. Kumar reflected on his 42 years of living in Australia.
"I have become global in my thinking, rather than local ... although I dearly value my Indian hertiage and culture, I definitely think like an Australian."
Prof. Kumar is the second person of Indian origin named as recipient of the Order of Australia in 2017 along with Perth based radiologist Prof Makhan Singh Khangure.
