'The World is Family' will have its Australian premiere, at the Antenna Documentary Film Festival in Sydney, running from 9 February to 19 February 2024, featuring 52 documentaries from around the globe.
The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023.
Speaking with SBS Hindi, Patwardhan discusses what inspired him to turn his personal home videos of his ageing parents into a feature documentary.
"My parents were getting old, and I wanted to preserve their memories, so I used to record events for myself and the family. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, when I started watching all those home videos and interview footage, it made me realise there is a history to be told," Mr Patwardhan.
Both sides of Mr Patwardhan's parents' families were involved in India's Freedom struggle.
Alongside the oral history of the freedom struggle, the film highlights the loving bond between ageing parents, old age, values, and creates a space for open dialogue.
Opening the festival is the Australian Premiere of Tribeca Film Festival winner, 'The Gullspång Miracle'.
"I am very proud of this lineup as a whole," said Festival Director Dudi Rokach. "Each documentary is imaginative, cinematic, and provocative, and I believe together they demonstrate the endless potential of documentary cinema in the hands of great filmmakers."
