A female Taxi Services Commission inspector was dragged for 50 metres with her head still inside the cab by a taxi driver in Melbourne in July last year.
Sadikur Rahman wasn’t an accredited taxi driver and when he was stopped for a random inspection near Crown Casino in Melbourne, he dragged the woman inspector with him.
The female inspector then jumped inside and pulled the hand-brake to stop the cab. Rahman tried to run away but was arrested by the inspector, Herald Sun reported.
“I just tried to escape from the scene. She jumped in, she was half in and I went about 50 metres and she stopped the car,” he said.
Rahman, who has a Masters degree in accounting, told police he had just wanted to make some quick money.
Last week, he pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court to dangerous driving following a plea deal with prosecutors.
His lawyer George Balot told the court a criminal conviction could ruin Rahman’s dream of becoming an accountant. He asked Magistrate Michelle Ehrlich to place him on a good behaviour bond.
“My client is profoundly remorseful and struggles to reconcile his shocking behaviour in a time where he was struggling to make ends meet,” the lawyer told the court.
“He has received counselling and it is evident that the psychologist found profound remorse particularly given his tearful disposition when discussing his actions.”
Rahman was placed on a $750 good behaviour bond for 12 months, and has lost his driving licence for nine months.
