Indian Cricket Team’s wicketkeeper MS Dhoni was seen wearing gloves with Indian Army insignia during the India-South Africa clash on Wednesday.
Dhoni was conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in November 2011 by the Indian Army.
On Wednesday, the former captain wore gloves with the regimental dagger insignia of the Indian Para Special Forces.
While the Indian Cricket team fans noticed and applauded Dhoni, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has requested Dhoni to remove the insignia from his gloves.
ICC General Manager of Strategic Communications, Claire Furlong told IANS that the world cricket governing body has asked Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to get the insignia removed.
“We have requested the BCCI to get it removed,” she said.
According to ICC regulations, “The ICC equipment and clothing regulations do not permit the display of messages that relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes during an international match.”
However, Indian fans were not impressed by ICC's request and urged the former Indian captain to keep wearing the gloves.
The #DhoniKeepTheGlove was trending on Twitter in India on Friday.
In February 2019, Dhoni and the rest of the Indian Cricket Team donned army-style caps before they took the field against Australia in an ODI game, in a bid to honour India’s fallen army personnel in the Pulwama attacks.
