Who's actually been leaving Australia during the pandemic?

ANALYSIS: New data from the Department of Home Affairs on who has been allowed to leave Australia, which countries they are going to, and why, has revealed some "concerning trends".


Highlights

The data cover the period from August 1 2020 to April 25 2021 and reveal some concerning trends.

The top countries of intended destination were India (25,443 requests), followed by China (21,547) and the UK (15,703), approval rates to the UK (68 per cent), India (46 per cent), and China (59 per cent).

Only 7.17 per cent of requests from India were approved, compared to 23.48 per cent from the UK and 30.73 per cent from South Africa.
