Wendy Rule's new double CD bears the name of the mythic queen of the Underworld. Over 24 tracks singer-songwriter Wendy Rule takes the audience through a journey over the concepts of darkness and light, despair and hope, love and loss, pain and joy. Rule captures the spirit of the ancient women, Demeter, Persephone and Hecate, and translates it into music and song. Those women commanded nature, reigned over the seasons, conversed with the elements, determined fertility and maintained their power through loss and adversity.
Persephone, abducted by Hades, becomes queen of the Underworld. Her mother Demeter, goddess of agriculture, in her sorrow for losing her beloved daughter lets an endless winter to get hold of the earth and humanity starves. Nothing grows as long as Demeter mourns for Persephone and looks for her daughter. Zeus, who had given permission to Hades to abduct Persephone, decides that Persephone will spend 6 months in the Underworld and 6 months on Earth with her mother. "Six for the darkness and six for the light" says Wendy Rule in one of her songs.
The myth of Persephone was more than a inspiration for Wendy Rule, it was a spiritual journey. A journey that brought her to Greece several times and drove her to learn Greek in her efforts to better understand and interpret not just the stories of those women but their lives, their emotions and their tribulations.
"It was a spiritual journey" said Wendy Rule to SBS Greek talking about the 12 years it took her to complete the CD which is launched on the 23rd of February at Thornbury Theater.
Twelve years and 24 tracks later, Persephone is a force of nature.
