Greek businessman Alexis Vaiou intended to place the statue in his restaurant, in Bremerhaven, Germany.
Speaking to Greek newspaper Kathimerini, he explains it was meant to serve as an attraction for people to support his charity efforts raising money for people experiencing homelessness in Athens and his place of residence.
However, the chancellor’s office provided consent to the ordering of the figure under the condition that it won’t be displayed in any commercial context.
The 42-year-old ended up donating the wax figure to the local office branch of Angela Merkel’s political party.
Made in Shanghai, it cost Mr Vaiou €10,000, a price beating by far the €400,000 quote he received from UK makers and a €40,000 quote in Germany.
