The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, marked the beginning of a night of liberation, unity, and hope. But behind the iconic images lies a complex story of opportunities and challenges that have left a lasting impact on East Germany and the entire country. This series delves deeply into the transformations that began on that pivotal day—a story that remains relevant even 35 years later.

The fall of the Berlin Wall set in motion Germany’s historic process of reunification. What began as a night of euphoria brought decades of profound challenges and drastic changes, especially for East Germany.

Mauerfall: 35 Years of Freedom and Transformation explores this transformation, showing how the shift to a free-market economy, adaptation to Western structures, and the accompanying sense of dislocation shaped the lives of many East Germans.
There was a change in the air but the government hadn’t given in yet.
Mathias Burbach
This series tells the layered and often unexpected stories arising out of reunification -from the emotional loss of a familiar identity, to the struggle for economic equality, and the tensions that fuelled a rise in far-right movements in regions that 35 years ago, had dreamed of freedom and unity.

Through personal stories and historical insights, Mauerfall asks: What was gained and what was lost on the path to freedom? And what lessons can be drawn today, as the hopes of 1989 continue to echo through Germany?
