Looking back on the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall: An interview with journalist Alexandra Falk

Journalist Alexandra Falk lives in Christchurch, New Zealand, and works for various German media outlets. With her involvement in the “Wir sind der Osten” initiative, she is actively working promoting a new awareness of the regions of East Germany. Leading up to the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, she curated the exhibition “Berlin Wall Stories” for the German Embassy in Wellington.


For the podcast series “Fall of the Wall: 35 Years of Freedom and Change” SBS reporter Benjamin Kanthak spoke with journalist Alexandra Falk about the aftermath of the historic event and the need for a new understanding of people in the new federal states of Germany.

Alexandra Falk lives in Wellington, New Zealand, where she works as a freelance journalist for various German media outlets. She is also part of the “Wir sind der Osten” initiative, which promotes a new awareness of East Germany and highlights the prospects and challenges of the region.

In the run-up to the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, she curated the exhibition “Berlin Wall Stories” at the German Embassy in Wellington. The project presents ten stories of ten different people whose lives are linked to the fall of the Wall.

As part of the new SBS German podcast series SBS reporter Benjamin Kanthak met Alexandra Falk to talk to her about, among other things, the lasting effects of the fall of the Berlin Wall in the regions of the former German Democratic Republic. In conversation, Falk reflects on the challenges and hopes of people in the new federal states of Germany and explains why it is so important to look ahead instead of falling into old stereotypes and narratives.
