"I thought I couldn't apply because I'm somewhat petite, slim, and Filipino."
First Constable Roma Concepcion of Victoria Police admits that she had misconceptions when aspiring to become a police officer in Australia.
In an interview with SBS Filipino, she shared that despite her height of only 5'5" and slim physique at that time, she gained confidence in her application to be a part of the police force.
"I attended an information session because Victoria Police hosts events for those interested in applying, so I kept asking questions," she stated.

What are the eligibility requirements for the application?
Upon becoming an Australian citizen, First Constable Concepcion started preparing physically and mentally.
"They said being tall isn't necessary, but you need strength and exercise. I hired a personal trainer for running, grip tests, push-ups, and swimming."
John Chau, the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Portfolio Officer at Victoria Police, addressed common misconceptions regarding within some communities.

"As long as you keep fit during the application process, you will be okay,” clarified Chau.
He added that applicants need to be 18 years old or above, possess an Australian Driver's License, be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and hold a Level 1 First Aid Certificate with CPR. There are no specific education requirements, pre-requisite subjects, or the need for an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).
Chau highlighted the importance of applicants declaring any associations or potential conflicts of interest. He mentioned, "It is important that Victoria Police are aware of any association or potential conflict of interest, as they may compromise you or reflect negatively on the organisation as a whole."
The CALD Portfolio Officer showcased benefits such as nine weeks of annual leave, increasing superannuation, and more.
Chau stressed that Victoria Police value diversity, which First Constable Concepcion echoed.
