  • For Yza, singing traditional Filipino love songs, or Kundiman, is more than just a musical endeavour; it is a cultural homage.
She is named as the OPM pop classical princess

Being named the Pop Classical Princess is an honour Yza cherishes deeply.

"It's an honour to have classical and pop in my name. Conjoined together. It's not every day that you see a classical singer also doing pop," she says.

Yza sees this blend of genres as a hallmark of the modern musical era, where boundaries are increasingly blurred, and experimentation is not just accepted but celebrated.

"In this new age, we can see different genres intertwining with each other, and experimenting with music is fun and rewarding to have something that works."

Expressing her unique style

Yza's journey in music began with a solid foundation in classical training, which she now fuses seamlessly with pop and contemporary styles.

"I initially started with classical before diving into pop and contemporary. My coach knows that, so they use my classical technique," she shares.

This blend allows Yza to craft a sound that is uniquely her own, showcasing her versatility and technical prowess.

Launching her music career in the Philippines

The experience of launching her music in the Philippines was a whirlwind of emotions for Yza.

"It was overwhelming but very exciting at the same time. As a new musician going into the industry in a different country, you never know what's going to happen. It's like waiting for the unknown," she recalls.

Despite the uncertainty, Yza was warmly welcomed.

"A lot of the press people and my coach had my back. It was a heart-warming experience."

The importance of preserving Kundiman

For Yza, singing traditional Filipino love songs, or Kundiman, is more than just a musical endeavour; it is a cultural homage.

"I think if you have any traditional songs in your culture, it's important to go back and study, reflect on the past songs. Especially Kundiman- lots of romance, themes relating to what was the standard in the past, and what traditions make up Filipino culture," she explains.

This deep dive into traditional music offers Yza a richer understanding of her heritage and the roots of original Filipino music.

For her, singing Filipino songs is a privilege that she deeply values.

"It's a very enlightening experience delving into something different other than the music we listen to today," she reflects.

It provides her with a unique perspective and a deeper appreciation for her cultural roots.

A legacy inspired by family

Yza's musical journey is deeply influenced by her grandmother, who was her role model and inspiration.

"My Lola got me into music through karaoke. She was the one who established the passion," Yza fondly recalls.

From those humble beginnings in karaoke to singing in shows, Yza Santos' journey is proof to the power of family influence and unwavering passion.
