Dementia is a degenerative disease with no known cure. Melbourne-based Australia-Filipino Community Services (AFCS) is finding ways to support communities in the Philippines to prepare and assist families for what is commonly described as the 'long goodbye'.

Key Points
  • The Philippines is yet to complete a national strategy and action plan focusing solely on Dementia.
  • AFCS is assisting communities in the Philippines with information sessions about Dementia and living with Dementia.
  • AFCS is working with grassroots communities to replicate the culturally specific care model they provide to Filipinos in Victoria.
'In the academic sector, we are doing a lot of research and study on Dementia but when it comes to the grassroots level, we do not have enough resources to provide proper information and support. The seniors and older members of the community will not be able to access these services and support unless we approach them.' Norminda Forteza, AFCS on the need to educate Filipinos on Dementia diagnosis, care, and planning.
