An inquiry into regional migration is investigating a drop in population growth across some parts of Australia and looking at how to encourage long-term settlement. The community organisation Settlement Services International is urging the federal government to pay attention to detail, warning its population policy won't be fully realised without effort.

The number of regional visa holders in Australia has risen in the past year, with figures released this week revealing 3,500 more visas were granted over the past year.
