Immigration of non-white people to Australia is not very long. Australia had a White Australia policy until 1975, meaning only white people could immigrate to Australia.
After the repeal of the White Australia Policy in 1975, immigration from South Asia, like the rest of the world, gradually began. But even before that we have heard of many Bengali immigrants, such as Mr. Mohammad Moksedul Haque Mintu. He is better known to local Bangladeshis as Mintu Haque.
He arrived in Australia in 1969 with a job in mining. A few years later, he married a local woman and settled in Australia. Mr. Mohammad Moksedul Haque Mintu shares his memories of immigration to Australia with SBS Bangla.
