Syful Islam: pioneer of Islamic calligraphy painting in Bangladesh

Islamic calligraphy by renowned Bangladeshi artist Syful Islam has been on display at an exhibition in Australia. Listen to SBS Bangla's interview with Mr. Islam who traveled to Sydney for the event.

Syful Islam, whose artworks are displayed in the Bangabhaban- the official residence and principal workplace of the President of Bangladesh - traveled to Sydney to participate in the two-day international exhibition of Islamic Art & Calligraphy in the western Sydney suburb of Bankstown. 

Islamic calligraphy artworks from over seven countries, including Indonesia, Pakistan, India, and Lebanon were also on display at the Bankstown Arts Centre.

Speaking to SBS Bangla Mr. Islam said, "Calligraphy is writing with art. When I am writing the Quran message, then it is Islamic Calligraphy and when writing in Bengali, then it is Bangla Calligraphy."

He said much of his inspiration came from Nagen Roy, who taught him in the 1960s.

"I do not think it is advisable to give any other symbol to the calligraphy letter, which does not have any value in fine art," Syful Islam said.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was fascinated by his portraits.

Syful Islam was responsible for the creation of all of the artwork of state until 1975, and has continued to be commissioned ever since.
