Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp (40 ml) vegetable oil
  • 500 g beef and pork mince
  • 2 onions, roughly chopped
  • ¼ cup plain flour
  • 1 cup (250 ml) beef stock
  • 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp each ground nutmeg and allspice
  • 150 ml thickened cream
  • Mashed potatoes, to serve (optional, see Note)
  • Finely chopped flat-leaf parsley, dill pickles, lingonberry jam or cranberry sauce, to serve
For the mashed potatoes
  • 1 kg potatoes, peeled, cut into large chunks
  • 100 ml milk, warmed
  • 50 g butter

Instructions

  1. For the mashed potatoes, place the potatoes into a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a simmer. Simmer for 20 minutes or until the potatoes are tender, then drain the potatoes and mash with the butter and milk to a smooth mash.
  2. Heat the oil in a large, heavy-based frying pan over medium heat. Form the mince into a giant patty and fry on each side until well-browned. Add the onions to the side of the pan. When the onions have browned, break up the beef mince with a wooden spoon, then add the flour and mix well to combine.
  3. Stir through the beef stock, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce and spices, then cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Stir through the cream.
  4. Divide the Swedish mince and mashed potatoes between plates. Sprinkle with parsley and serve with dill pickles and a dollop of lingonberry jam (or cranberry sauce).
