Apple crumble

The classic apple crumble, a dessert of stewed apples and a crumbly mixture of flour, sugar and butter baked until crisp, is believed to have originated from England during World War II, when food rationing was prevalent. A simple but comforting dessert, the widespread appeal of the humble apple crumble remains popular to this day.

Ingredients

  • 5 large Granny Smith apples (about 1 kg)
  • ¼ cup caster sugar
  • ¼ cup water
  • Double cream or ice-cream, to serve
For the crumble topping
  • ½ cup self-raising flour
  • ¼ cup plain flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 100 g butter, chilled and diced
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Grease deep 1.5 litre (6-cup) baking dish.
  2. Peel, core and quarter the apples. Cook the prepared apples with the sugar and water in large saucepan over low heat, covered, for 10 minutes, or until tender. Drain the cooked apples and discard the cooking liquid.
  3. To make the crumble topping, combine the ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and process until well combined.
  4. Place the cooked apples into the prepared baking dish and sprinkle with the crumble. Bake for 25 - 35 minutes, or until the crumble is golden on top. Serve the apple crumble with double cream or ice-cream.

Oven temperatures are for conventional; if using fan-forced (convection), reduce the temperature by 20˚C. | We use Australian tablespoons and cups: 1 teaspoon equals 5 ml; 1 tablespoon equals 20 ml; 1 cup equals 250 ml. | All herbs are fresh (unless specified) and cups are lightly packed. | All vegetables are medium size and peeled, unless specified. | All eggs are 55-60 g, unless specified.
