These clever cake makers have us all starry-eyed

Some of the internet's most creative baking bloggers are making totally out-of-this-world cakes.

Cakes come in all shapes and sizes. But a planet? A truly round planet cake? Yes, it's possible. And several clever blogging bakers have done just that. They're among a brace of bakers who've been inspired by heavenly bodies to do some impressive cake making and decorating (and in many cases, shared how to do it too).  Here are five favourites, including two earth cakes that are as fun on the inside as they are on the outside.

1. Black velvet nebula cake

The cook behind this creation was inspired by images from . The books are a series that show amazing images taken from the Hubble Space Telescope during its lifetime. The founder of , Heather Baird, writes on her blog that after seeing all the incredible images she was inspired to put her galaxy-painting skills onto cake. She decided her canvas would be made of black velvet, and to make things "more interesting" Baird added confetti to her cake mix, hoping the speckled interior would mimic a starry galaxy. She explains how she created the intergalactic cake on .

2. Earth structural layer cake

founder Rhiannon Michell was inspired to make this earth cake when her sister approached her with an idea. Michell's sister is studying education and wanted to teach her primary school class about the earth's structure using a cake model. Michell thought it would be impossible to make a cake that required a sphere inside a sphere. But, ever the optimist, she persevered and ended up baking a cake inside a cake. The result is pure genius.

3. Jupiter structural layer cake

After the success of her earth cake (above), Rhiannon Michell had many requests asking how she made it and if she could make it again. The cake creator says on her blog that because she hates repeating bakes she decided to recreate it as a different planet. Michell decided on Jupiter, predominantly because of its Great Red Spot. The cake features this spot on the outer design. It also has three layers of different coloured cake inside. She detailed the atmosphere of Jupiter by covering the cake in ivory marshmallow fondant and then dry brushed a combination of ivory, brown and maroon edible ink.

4. Zodiac constellation cake

founder Heather Baird is a self-confessed star gazer, a hobby that inspired her zodiac constellation cake. On her blog she admits that she's never put much thought into considering the zodiac until now. The inner cake creation is what Baird calls a 'galaxy swirl' - made from a vanilla-white cake recipe stained with food dye; the outside uses black fondant handpainted with constellations. Find the recipe and detailed instructions .

5. Chocolate-filled earth cake

This earth cake from cake creator Beth Klosterboer was created for an Earth Day project she was part of for . Klosterboer says what makes her earth cake unique is the interior surprise - she decided to fill the earth cake with chocolate rocks to make it different from other earth cakes. She has a link to a step-by-step guide for creating this cake, and her technique  for frosting an spherical cake, .
