After half a century on the waterfront at Pyrmont, Sydney’s famous is moving – next door.
A $250 million dollar site at Blackwattle Bay is in the pipeline and expected to be twice the size of the current location, which Premier Mike Baird described today as “tired and run down”.
A deal reached between the NSW state government and the current leaseholders will mean the iconic vendor will still sit on the water but reach back to Wentworth Park.
are currently open to design the new site with the government looking for a pitch that is creative, innovative, sustainable and “sensitive to the surrounding community and environment”.
Restaurants, a public boardwalk and possibly a rooftop bar are set to be included in the plans and it is hoped that the new-look location will increase the number of visitors the fish market to around six million each year.
Building is expected to start in 2018 and be completed by late 2020, during which time the current market – which is already the largest fish market in the southern hemisphere - will remain open. The old site is expected to be sold off to help fund the new development.
