We all love a bit of low-rent luxury, and what’s more low-rent than a simple packet of instant noodles?
This ramen recipe, labelled a “hack” across the internet, has been popping up on my TikTok account for weeks. It involves fortifying a bowl of instant noodle broth with an egg, some Japanese mayo and a clove of finely grated garlic – what could go wrong?
After doing a bit of digging it appears the recipe was popularised by a Japanese YouTuber and then a who had found it in the depths of the YouTube rabbit hole.
The original recipe was made using a packet of miso flavoured ramen but you can use any soupy instant noodle you like. If you trust the process, you’ll end up with a luscious fortified soup, reminiscent of a tonkotsu and with protein from the egg.
The recipe below is just a base to add any garnishes you like, like veg, another egg, or extra meat. How to make mayo egg ramen

Take 1 packet of instant noodles and place just the noodles (no seasoning) in a small pot of boiling water.
While they cook, grab your serving bowl and add 1 egg, about 1 tbsp of Japanese mayonnaise, 1 clove of finely grated garlic, and the seasoning packet from your noodles. Mix well until smooth paste forms.
Once the noodles are ready, add them straight to your bowl with enough water to make a broth and quickly mix to emulsify the egg and mayo.
