Indian chefs have cooked up what looks like a record-breaking bread.
The Delhi team created a 147-centimetre bhatura cooked in a giant wok. It was a super-sized take on the delicious puffy fried bread that's a ubiquitous street snack in the city, usually served with chole (a chickpea curry).
Perhaps not surprisingly, the co-ordinated rolling and frying event was sponsored by one of the country's leading oil brands. Leonardo Olive Oil said it wanted to show people they didn't need to avoid fried food. "Today’s affluent Indian consumers tend to shy away from what they love the most – fried Indian food.... while they have adapted their lifestyles to a mixed food culture, they still love their paranthas, pakoras, and bhaturas which they now seldom consume, " Neelima Burra, chief marketing officer of Cargill Foods India, which owns the Leonardo brand, , held on Thursday.
Multiple breads were made as the team worked towards the record, and some careful handling was required.Organisers hope the bread will be confirmed as India's largest bhatura by the Limca Book of Records, an Indian reference book.
